Family caregivers provide an incredible amount of support—often without compensation.

But did you know that some family caregivers may be able to receive payment for providing approved care through Medicaid-funded programs?

Our goal is to help families and referral partners understand that there may be options available.

Full-Time Family Caregivers 🧑‍🧑‍🧒

Family members often provide much more than occasional help.

They may assist with:

• Bathing and personal hygiene

• Dressing and grooming

• Meal preparation

• Mobility and transfers

• Household tasks

• Medication reminders

• Transportation

• Supervision and companionship

Over time, these responsibilities can become a significant commitment—especially when a loved one needs daily assistance.

That's where Medicaid Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) programs may provide an important resource.

💰 Can a Family Member Really Get Paid?

In some circumstances, yes.

Medicaid HCBS programs can allow eligible individuals to receive services in their homes rather than in institutional settings.

In Nebraska & Iowa, for example, Medicaid Personal Assistance Services allow an eligible individual to choose a qualified family member as a paid provider, provided that family member is not legally responsible for the individual.

A spouse or parent/guardian of a minor child cannot be a paid provider under that program.

Nebraska's Aged and Disabled Waiver also includes services such as Personal Care and Respite that support individuals living in the community.
